BEST For Seniors® Dementia Support Therapy™ is a non-medical program for promoting the physical, psychological and social well-being of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and dementia patients who are in the early- to middle-stages of their illness and living at home.
How It Works
Early- to middle-stage dementia patients still have parts of their brains that are undamaged by their illness. Scientific research has shown that healthy parts of the brain can, in some cases, assume the functions of damaged parts through a process called neuroplasticity.
This process can be advanced by engaging the patient in a specialized activity program. Studies have shown that programs of this type can, for some patients, slow the progress of dementia.
We work with our patients at their homes. Our proprietary methods are tailored to meet the needs of the individual and are adaptable as those needs change.
To maintain cognitive functions, BEST For Seniors Dementia Support Therapy provides challenges appropriate for the patient at each stage of his/her illness. Eight key areas of cognitive health are targeted: mind-body integration, awareness, attention, comprehension, learning, memory, problem solving, and, in early-stage illness, critical thinking.
Exercise is also a key component of BEST For Seniors Dementia Support Therapy. Physically fit patients tend to have fewer complicating medical conditions and will generally fare better throughout the progression of their illness. Exercise also helps reduce patients’ feelings of anger, frustration, helplessness, fear and depression. BEST For Seniors can provide a complete fitness program or augment physical therapy the patient is receiving.
As the patient’s illness progresses with a decline in memory, language and mathematical skills, the cognitive and physical components of the support therapy program are gradually merged. Ultimately, cognitive function is stimulated with our unique method of reinforcing body awareness with physical touch, verbal cues and guided exercises that focus on movement sequencing and muscle control.
The goal of BEST For Seniors Dementia Support Therapy is to promote the best possible quality of life for both the patient and his/her family while the patient is living at home. We encourage family members and caregivers to actively participate in the therapy sessions and practice program activities with the patient daily. We also recommend that they keep a weekly journal of the patient’s achievements, performance of Activities of Daily Living, social interactions, outings, behavior and mood. This journal can help guide the direction of the therapy program.
BEST For Seniors Dementia Support Therapy brings a positive, “can-do” attitude to Alzheimer’s and dementia care. We provide support and encouragement so that patients are able to “do all they can for as long as they can.”™
